about Dahn Yoga
Dahn Yoga (traditionally named Dahn Hak®) is a holistic health and training system that empowers individuals to manage their own bodies well in order to become more healthy, happy and peaceful.

In Korean, "Dahn" means energy, vitality, and origin of life, and "Hak" means study, philosophy, and theory. Dahnhak is the study of energy (Ki, Chi) and how to use it for personal empowerment by restoring mind/body communication.

The stretches and postures in regular class are designed to restore healthy energy circulation in the body, focusing especially on correcting the skeletal structure, revitalizing organ functioning, increasing circulation, releasing tension from the upper body, and strengthening the lower body.

The benefits of regular practice of Dahn Yoga are many, and regularly include:

  • Ability to manage stress
  • Weight Loss
  • Increased focus
  • Deeper and more restful sleep
  • Deeper breathing
  • Calmer mind
  • Increased digestive functioning
  • Increase in overall body strength, especially lower legs
  • Normalize blood pressure
  • Emotional improvement
  • Greater flexibility
  • Improvement in balance
  • Increase in self-efficacy

Please click here to see the results of a 3 month study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine about some of the benefits of regular Dahn Yoga practice.

improving holistic health

How will the Dahn Yoga Program Help my Holistic Health?

We have a physical, an energetic and a spiritual body. For holistic health, these three bodies need to connect to each other well and harmoniously.

The most dense body, the physical body, needs good care, healthy meals, deep breathing and warm relationships. Regular Class is the start of taking care of the physical body, and opening the energy body.

The energy body is the less dense body, & it needs to flow like water. Invisible things such as thoughts, emotions, & memories belong to this body. If there are physical blockages in the body, and/or if we hold onto unhealthy emotional and mental patterns this energy will leak, freeze, or get stuck. Ultimately, we will suffer various symptoms from this. Healing Sessions will loosen the physical blockages, or help change unhealthy mental/emotional patterns.

Exercising mindfully helps loosen the physical blockages and become more sensitive to "observing" mental and emotional patterns. Over time and with deep practice, suffering can end. The Initial Awakening Workshop teaches how to begin mastering the power of mindfulness through the body.

For total holistic health, we need one more step, going to the deepest core, where true peace and joy resides. This is the journey to the essence, true self, or soul, whatever you choose to call it. The way to deep joy and peace is by experiencing this core and then choosing to stay connected to this part of yourself. The Shim Sung Workshop shows a way to experience this deepest joy and find your own sacred voice; and guides you how to stay there as much as you can for your holistic health.

Total holistic health is possible for everyone to access through their body, if you trust that it is within you. We call this the ’HSP’ principle: that everyone can experience Health, Happiness (Smile), and Peace.

But, just as we cannot fill our stomachs by looking at a meal- we must experience the meal– you also must experience each step through action with your body. The Dahn Yoga program will help when you practice consistently along the way.

the center
The Beacon Hill Dahn Yoga center opened its doors in 2004 and has since enjoyed a warm and consistent group of practitioners. Members are all ages and abilities, and live as close as across the street, and as far away as Australia and Kuwait. Some members of the center come once a week for a few months to relieve their stress, and others come regularly for years to develop their body, mind, and spirit to its maximum potential.

At the Beacon Hill Center, our mission is to help you meet your goal. The instructors dedicate themselves to class quality, member care, and to making the center an oasis in the city: a place where all members can come and find peace in mind, body, and spirit - even if it is just for an hour a week.

We are also dedicated to sharing the excellent tools and healing energy of the center with the greater Boston community through participation in Outreach and Dahn Foundation events. For more information about Beacon Hill Dahn Center Outreach classes and the Dahn Foundation, please contact the Beacon Hill Dahn Yoga staff.

YEHA (Young Earth Human Alliance)

YEHA (Young Earth Human Alliance) is a gathering of younger Dahn members, who have passion and desire to actively use their energy to create a healthier, happier and more peaceful world. Members participate in Dahn Yoga’s higher-energy exercises and special trainings, providing them with activities that help them stay healthy and use their energy creatively, productively and peacefully. Recently, in Mago Garden, about 130 YEHA members from all over the country gathered for a YEHA/BNB Leadership camp, where they received special training and made actionplans to heal their communities upon returning home.

Phoenix Project
The Phoenix Project is a national initiative to empower the youth generation and communities through holistic self-development, leadership, and service. The project rests on one simple principle: in our bodies and minds, we have the power and energy to create the lives and world we seek. In this way everyday of the Phoenix Project is spent: training and cultivating a sense of power, passion and purpose through Dahn Yoga, Martial Arts, and meditation, and then applying that energy through community service to make a real and vital change in the world.
